A short description of the railway station's history

The railway station was inaugurated as a terminus of the Hanover south rail in Göttingen in 1854. During the construction, the architects orientated themselves on the Hanover railway station. They also used natural stones and adopted the Hanover round arch style. In the course of the over 150 year history, the railway station has been rebuilt and extended several times. Around 1900, the station forecourt was newly created and decorated with palm trees, which mediate an exotic atmosphere during the summer months. Towards the end of the 2nd World War, bombs destroyed the station and tracks. During the rebuilding, the facade, among others, was redesigned. The last great modernisation measure started in 1999, it happened in three different building sections, the opening took place in March 2007. A part of the generous rebuildings inside the station and the tracks, the environment was also redesigned. A pergola separates the station from the city centre on the east side. On the west side, among others, a car park was built, an Intercity-Hotel, a press and media house and an adult education school. The old locomotive hall was turned into an event centre.
