When Jacob Grimm was expelled form Göttingen n the then kingdom Hanover in December 1837, he made a 'detour' via Witzenhausen in Hesse, to escape to his brother Wilhelm in Kassel. He was accompanied by two professor associates of the famous 'Göttinger Seven', which were accommodated in the present inn 'Zur Krone'. On this December evening, he gave a freedom speech on the Witzenhauser marketplace. In honour of this event, Jacob Grimm was honoured with a statue in the marketplace in 2013.

Idea and history are rooted to an extend in the worldwide published 'Children and House Fairy Tales' by the brothers Grimm, which have been recognised as UNESCO's-Memory of the World Programme by now.

Since the founding of the 'Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutsche Märchenstraße' (Working Group German Fairy Tales Road) in 1975, it developed into one of the most well known of the 150 German holiday routes, as a look at the www.ferienstrassen.info shows.

From the 'working group', a registered Association with an independent office developed in 2007, in order to do justice even better with the great potential of the theme and to stay successful in the changed tourist market – in the interest of the tourism added value in the member communities from Hanau to Bremen.

The Göttinger Verschönerungsverein e. V. (society for the improvement of the city) erected in memory of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brother-Grimm-Stone at the corner Hainbundstraße/Brüder-Grimm-Allee.
