Historische Sternwarte
Geismar Landstraße 11
37083 Göttingen
The historic observatory situated next to the new town hall was built in the year 1816.
It was built after the drawings by the university master builder Georg-Heinrich Borheck. Karl Friedrich Gauß worked here until his death. One of his most important developments is the facility of the first electro-mechanical telegraph, which he installed with his colleague, the physicists Wilhelm Weber. Our present electronic media system has its origin here.

From 1816 to 1855, the historical observatory was home and workplace of the famous scholar Carl Friedrich Gauß. Until the year 2005, it housed the Institute for Astrophysics. Since 2006, it is the seat of the Lichtenberg-Kollegs.
Some of Göttingen's buildings could be seen on our old 10 DM note.
