Julius Philipp Georg Merkel

The Merkelstraße is named after Julius Philipp Georg Merkel, who was mayor from 1871 onwards and later lord mayor of the city of Göttingen. The building of numerous schools, water pipes and canalisation, a theatre and many other buildings go back to Merkel's initiative.

The parapet that surrounded Göttingen, was broken open and in parts flattened. Here residential areas and streets were built.
Above the Merkelstraße, bordering at the Schillerwiesen, starts the Hainberg, which were reforested by Merkel. In the lower area is a memorial plaque for Merkel.

On the initiative of Merkel one started to place marble plaques at Gttingen's residentialplaces where important personalities were honoured with name, occupational title and residing data. Today roughly 300 plaques are hanging on houses in Gttingen.
